Gilt Viking protective armour brooch/necklace 1000-1100 AD

- Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armour
- As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior
- This fine example is 2 cm (3/4 inch) diameter with low rounded front and back forming ridged edges and with a tapered cross pin
- The surface is textured from burial
- Professionally refurbished with the 24 karat gold overlay restored
- On a 50 cm (20 inch) gilt Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear
- Total weight 4.0 gm
