Silver Crusader’s Cross pendant 1096-1291 AD

$2,650.00

Details

  • A genuine pendant as worn by a Crusader
  • Circular pendant, pierced with a cross potent, “crutches” at the beam ends.
  • That form is also known as the Crusader’s Cross, having been an element in the arms of Godfrey of Bouillon which he wore during the First Crusade. Godfrey was a Frankish Knight of the First Crusade, known as Baron of the Holy Sepulchre and the Crusader King, ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem following its victorious siege in the First Crusade. Thus, it is also known as the Jerusalem Cross.
  • This example is delicately detailed with the outer ring crenulated or roped. The beam “crutches” are formed by smaller elements identical to the main beams.
  • It is just under 22.5 mm (7/8”) in diameter plus the intact suspension loop. The front is relief modelled in low relief with inner scalloped rim and symmetrical cross with “crutches” representing five crosses in one and symbolising the five wounds of Christ.
  • Pendant weighs 2.09 gm
  • Professionally refurbished with the pure silver overlay restored, on an 18” modern Sterling silver neck chain, 45cm (17.5 inches) long.
  • A beautifully delicate reminder of our ancient past and the innate tenderness of men
