Viking
The Viking Age (793-1066) was characterised by sea travel and expeditions to foreign territories to trade, seek riches, explore and conquer new lands. Men and women wore jewellery, in the form of rings, arm rings, brooches and necklaces. The beautiful jewellery was ornamental and it could also serve to indicate wealth, have a practical function or hold symbolic value.

Men and women from all layers of Viking society wore jewellery, in the form of necklaces, brooches, rings and arm rings. The jewellery was ornamental and it could also serve to indicate wealth. Some items, such as brooches, had a practical function as well, and others had symbolic value, such as Thor’s hammers. Viking jewellery could be made from various materials, such as gold, bronze, amber, glass and wood. Pieces of jewellery were often decorated with geometric designs, plaited bands, twisted ropes, hearts and animal motifs. Its intricate beauty shows that the Vikings were far from primitive, but deeply sensitive and truly religious.
