Georgian

The Georgian period (1714-1837) covered the reigns of five English kings, George I, II, III, IV, and William IV. The Georgian Era references England, but was also influenced by events in France, Germany and Italy. Georgian jewellery was all handcrafted and the hallmark of Georgian jewellery is its beautifully ornate and delicate metal work and its gorgeous old cut gemstones.

Georgian jewellery was all handcrafted with labour intensive processes. The jewellers had to hammer gold ingots and other metals into thin sheets by hand before starting to make the pieces. The jewellery is rare, as many pieces were melted down and made into newer pieces, because they were considered out-of-date. The jewellery will not have gold stamps or makers marks, as these were not brought in until the 1900s. Gemstones were often set in closed back settings, which could include foil backing under the gems to enhance their sparkle in candlelight. The hallmark of Georgian jewellery is its beautifully ornate and delicate metal work, and its gorgeous old cut gemstones.
