Art-Deco

The Art Deco period (1920-1935) extended between the two world wars and brought a dramatic change in women’s fashion that was reflected in the jewellery of the time too. Jewellery design was clean and geometric and cultures around the world influenced the Art Deco era and introduced new jewellery fashions, from ancient Egyptian motifs to exotic, colourful gemstones.

The term ‘Art Deco’ came from the Exposition International des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, an exhibition in Paris in 1925 that had a strong focus on jewellery, but this style began to develop in the early 1900s. This vibrant and eclectic style of jewellery was inspired by the Modernist art movements, modern industry and exotic cultures and there was a clean, geometric approach to design as a whole. Cultures around the world influenced the Art Deco era and introduced new jewellery fashions, from ancient Egyptian motifs to exotic, colourful gemstones such as lapis lazuli, turquoise and agate.
