Antiquities
Antiquity means ‘ancient times’ and antiquities are objects, including jewellery, from our earliest known history up until the Middle Ages, also known as the Dark Ages, which began with the fall of the Roman empire in 476 AD and extended to the Renaissance in the 14th century, beginning in Florence and spreading to Europe.

The definition of the term ‘antiquities’ is not always precise, but in general it covers objects from the dawn of recorded civilisation to the end of Dark Ages, so from 4000 B.C to the 14th Century A.D. Most, but not all, antiquities have been recovered in archaeological digs. The term antiques is generally used for later objects but can also refer to anything that is at least 100 years old. Antiquities embraces the cultures of Egypt, Greece, Rome and the Near East, including the Byzantine Empire, where art, literature and learning flourished in the east during the Dark Ages in the West, allowing our rich traditions of philosophy, religion and science to be preserved and passed on.
