Antique

Antique jewellery is any piece that is over 100 years old. These pieces are often rare and precious and have usually been handmade with a great deal of love and care. They are not always perfect because the stones are handcut and the pieces are handmade, and that is part of their charm.

Antique jewellery is characterised by the time or era it came from, and is often named after the ruling Kings or Queens of England. The Elizabethan Era refers to the time of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign (1558–1603), the Golden Era which was reflected in their gorgeous elaborate jewellery. The Georgian Era was named after four successive King Georges (1714-1837) and the pieces are delicate and handmade. The Victorian Era (1837-1890) spanned the long life of Queen Victoria and the different stages are characterised as Early Romantic, Middle Grand and Late Aesthetic Victorian. The Edwardian Era (1901-1915), named after Queen Victoria’s son Edward, was characterized by extravagant jewellery with diamonds, rubies and emeralds arranged in intricate designs.
