Sapphires and rubies are both gem varieties of the mineral corundum, one of the hardest known natural substances. Sapphires come in a large range of colours. Blue sapphires are the most common and on its own, the word ‘sapphire’ means blue corundum. When the colour of a sapphire is not blue, the colour is used in the name, for example, pink sapphire, and the colours range from pink to purple, green to yellow, and white.

Sapphires are gem varieties of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). Corundum is one of the hardest known natural substances after diamond. Sapphires contain traces of iron, titanium and nickel, producing the large range of colours found. Blue sapphires are the most common and used alone, the word ‘sapphire’ means blue corundum. When the colour of a sapphire is not blue, they are known as fancy sapphires and the colour is used in the name, for example, pink sapphire. The colours range from white to pink, orange, yellow, green, purple, and violet.
