Gold

Gold forms in star explosions called supernovae. Pure gold is a precious metal which is golden yellow in colour. Pure gold is soft and malleable, so it is alloyed with other metals to give it strength and durability when making jewellery. The more “yellow” a piece of gold is, the more pure it will be. Generally, most jewellery is produced using 18K gold, which is 75% gold and 25% other metals, or 14K (58%) gold.

Pure gold is a precious metal which is golden yellow in colour and stable under most conditions, meaning that it won’t tarnish, rust or corrode. However, pure gold is soft and malleable, so it is alloyed with other metals to give it strength and durability when making jewellery. The more “yellow” a piece of gold is, the more pure it will be. 24 Karat or 24K gold is pure gold, the symbol 24K denoting 24/24 parts pure gold or 100% gold. This is gold in its softest and most malleable state. Anything less than pure gold is expressed as percentages or fractions of pure gold and other metals and the gold is marked accordingly, so 18K gold is 18/24 or 75% pure gold and 25% alloy, marked as 750, and 14K gold is 14/24 or 58.3% and is marked as 583.
