Filigree
Filigree is a form of intricate metalwork which features interwoven fine wire or threads, which have been coiled or twisted to create beautiful patterns. These delicate patterns are then soldered together to make all kinds of jewellery. Filigree work has been around for around 5000 years and was very popular during the Renaissance and the Art Deco periods.

There are two main types of filigree jewellery. They are ‘openwork’ filigree and ‘metal-supported’ filigree. In ‘openwork’ filigree, stronger wires are soldered together to hold the finer wires in place. This style of filigree has a lace-like quality. With ‘metal-supported’ filigree, the fine twisted wires are supported by a back plate or sheet of metal. Filigree jewellery can be made from a variety of metals including gold, silver, and platinum. It is also possible to incorporate gemstones within the metalwork, to beautiful effect.
